Apart from poor state planning and inconsistent policies, the culprit of poverty in Myanmar is the sanctions fro abroad. Numerous businesses go bankrupt every year due to losing trade as a result of sanctions by USA, EU and several other countries. Myanmar people did not choose the junta but they cna't possibly do anything about their position in power.
Unless bans and sanctions are lifted, Myanmar will fall into great poverty which has damned several other countries to unrest and civil war. Does anyone want this to happen?
We are a country cut off from the outside world by three things: the administration, the outside world and the people themselves. Firstly, we have a successful system of governance that controls the media efficiently. Secondly, the outside world punishes the regime by closing relations with us. Thirdly, the citizens, largely ignorant of what is happening outside the country, develop xenophobia. This is a shame for a nation which is otherwise friendly towards foreign visitors.

If nothing is done about the situation, blind nationalism can develop which will turn the country from western nations resulting in a second North Korea.
